Vitaly Goldansky. The leader of the Russian Pugwash group during most of the 1980s and 1990s was a chemist, Goldansky. When the intelligentsia was turning against Gorbachev in 1990, he and Burlatsky were among the few intellectual leaders who opposed Yeltsin’s and Sakharov’s plan for a general strike.
